What is Aluminium backed PCB(or MCPCB)?

2024-10-31

Metal Core Printed Circuit Board (MCPCB), also known as thermal PCB or metal backplane PCB, is a PCB that uses metal material as the base of the heat sink portion of the circuit board. Thick metal (almost always aluminum or copper) covers one side of the PCB. When the metal substrate is aluminum, it is Aluminum backed PCB, and its layout is similar to other PCBs. Aluminum PCBs have one or more layers of copper, solder mask, and silkscreen on them. However, instead of fiberglass or plastic substrates, aluminum circuit boards have metal substrates.

Structural features of aluminum substrates

Circuit copper layer: The copper circuit layer (generally electrolytic copper foil) is etched to form a printed circuit for component assembly and connection. Compared with traditional FR4, aluminum PCB can carry higher current at the same thickness and line width.

Dielectric insulation layer: The dielectric insulation layer is the core technology of aluminum substrates. It mainly plays the role of bonding, insulation, and thermal conductivity. The insulation layer has good thermal conductivity, which is conducive to the heat dissipation generated by components, reducing the operating temperature of the device, increasing the power load, reducing the volume, extending the service life, and increasing the power output. The materials of the bonding material are dielectric film or conductive film, and these two are generally used.

Bonding PCBs to metals through dielectric materials (such as FR-4 prepreg) can be used for a variety of applications. Since metal parts are usually machined and surface treated before bonding, the prepregs used are mostly non-flow or low-flow types to avoid excessive resin leakage into the module cavity. For RF power amplifiers, metal heat sinks need to be grounded through PCBs, and conductive films (such as ablefilm cf-3350) are widely used.

MCPCB: The choice of metal for insulated metal substrate depends on many factors such as the thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity, strength, hardness, weight, surface condition and cost of the metal substrate.

In general, aluminum substrate is the first choice from the perspective of cost and technical performance. The available aluminum materials are 6061, 2052, 1060, etc. If there are higher requirements for thermal conductivity, mechanical properties, electrical properties or other specific performance standards, copper, stainless steel, iron or silicon steel plates can also be used.

Materials used for multi-layer, single-sided adhesives for metal core PCB (MCPCB)

Metal core PCB (MCPCB) uses pre-bonding and post-bonding materials to make multi-layer, single-sided and double-sided circuit boards. Pre-bonding laminates are usually supplied by Rogers or Taconic. Post-bonding is done by commercially available sheet film bonding materials.
